The castle in Olsztyn is one of the most recognisable strongholds in the Krakow-Czestochowa Upland. Already from a distance, the 35 m high tower invites tourists to visit the ruins of the fortress. The construction of the castle is attributed to King Casimir the Great (mid-14th century). However, some historians claim that a walled stronghold had already stood there earlier. The castle was destroyed during the Swedish Deluge in 1655. Thanks to limestone outcrops and karst caves incorporated in the construction, the stronghold belongs to the group of cave castles.
