Queen Louise Mine

Queen Louise Mine

The “Queen Luisa” mine is one of the oldest in Upper Silesia. Its beginnings date back to 1791, when it was one of the largest and most modern mines in Europe. The above-ground part is located at 410 Wolności Street around the former “Carnall” shaft. Visitors to the site have the opportunity to see the shaft and signal communication equipment, the exhibition of cage slings, the shaft workshop, the departmental mine rescue station, as well as the interior of the 6 KV electrical switching station. The main attraction of the Open-air Museum is the only operating steam hoist of its kind in Europe. The underground part - 43 Sienkiewicza Street - is located around the no longer existing "WILHELMINA" shaft. Includes excavations from the early 19th century and contemporary. Tourists descend to a depth of 35m and traverse underground passages with a total length of 1560m. The mine galleries and excavations are located on different levels and are connected by ramps. During a tour of the underground, you can follow the different techniques of coal mining. Unforgettable experiences include a visit to two mechanised longwalls, a demonstration of large mining equipment such as a plough, a longwall shearer and a roadheader, as well as a ride on the Karlik mine train.
