Lokietek Cave in Ojcow National Park

Lokietek Cave in Ojcow National Park

The Lokietek Cave is the largest cave - among all known - in the Park. Its length is 320 m. It consists of several corridors, two large halls (the Knight's Hall and the Bedroom) and two smaller ones. The cave is connected with the legend of Wladyslaw Lokietek, who took refuge from Bohemian King Wenceslaus II at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The future king of Poland stayed in the cave for about 6 weeks. His life was saved by a spider, covering the opening of the cave with a web. Thanks to this, the pursuing knights were misled. Seeing the fine, silvery netting, they concluded that no human could have passed that way. In honour of these events, the cave is still called the Lokietek Cave, and its entrance is guarded by a gate in the shape of a spider's web.
